• Find out exactly who your letter will be read by. It helps to address it directly to that person by name and not just “sir or madam.” It’ll show you’ve taken the time to research the situation and that you’re serious about attending the school if possible.

• Clearly explain what specific circumstances have affected your family’s financial situation and have impacted your ability to contribute towards your student’s college expenses. Include specific details of the circumstance. For example, if you have had a significant amount of medical or dental expenses in the previous year, be sure to include the total amount paid out-of-pocket, the date and reason for treatment, and if you expect similar costs in the upcoming year. Attaching supporting documentation, such as an itemized list of the medical expenses along with receipts, is helpful.

• If the student’s second choice school has offered a significantly greater amount of aid, explain this in the letter to add some leveraging power. Just be sure not to come off too aggressive (“School X offered us $5,000 more a year then you did, so if you don’t match that – we’re walking!”). No one likes to be threatened.
• Include any recent achievements/awards that the student has received since applying for admission to help them stand out from other college applicants. Remember, schools want students to sell themselves. The more a student can offer to a college, the more they’ll be willing to do to get them.

• Check with the college’s financial aid office to see if they have any specific requirements and/or deadlines for an appeal. Many colleges have their own eligibility criteria for an appeal (for example, the school may only take unemployment into consideration if the parent has been unemployed for at least 10 weeks). Furthermore, most schools require additional information such as an institutional Special Circumstance Form, verification material, and supporting documentation. If so, these materials must be submitted along with the appeal letter in order for the school to proceed with the re-evaluation process.

• After sending the letter, follow up with the school a few days later to confirm they received the material and no additional information is needed.

Above all, remain humble and gracious throughout your letter. Thank the school for accepting your student and for the aid they’ve already offered. Express your desire for your child to attend the college, but also emphasize the fact that if the aid package is not increased, it won’t be possible for them to do so.

As long as additional aid funds are available, it’s within the realm of possibility that a school can increase their award to your student.

You never know until you ask, so if it’s a make or break situation, do yourself a favor and ask! Follow the tips I’ve laid out and you’ll stand as good a chance as you can for receiving additional aid.

I love Ivy University, and it would mean so much to me to graduate with a degree from this school, which would make me the first person in my family to complete a college degree. If I am reinstated, I will focus much better on my schoolwork, take fewer hours, and manage my time more wisely. Fortunately, my father is recovering and has returned to work, so I should not need to travel home nearly as often. Also, I have met with my advisor, and I will follow her advice about communicating better with my professors from now on.

Please understand that my low GPA that led to my dismissal does not indicate that I am a bad student. Really, I'm a good student who had one very, very bad semester. I hope you will give me a second chance. Thank you for considering this appeal.

A long and important chapter in the history of your alma mater’s Printing & Publishing/ Graphic Communications program is coming to a close, with the upcoming retirement of Dale Metzker, Assistant Professor of Printing and Publishing. Mr. Metzker is the last member of the College faculty to have also taught at both of Penn College’s predecessors, Williamsport Area Community College and Williamsport Technical Institute, and he’s an alumnus of WTI. He’s also been known to occasionally appear on Campus dressed as another famous printer, Ben Franklin, and I thought you might find it interesting to read the following piece, written by Bill Ward, a member of the Computer Science faculty at Penn College:

“Our Own Ben Franklin Plans to Retire.

Ben Franklin had nothing on Dale Metzker - both started out as printers, but Dale chose to go into teaching printing as a career, whereas, Ben went into politics and also flew a kite. For 39 ½ years Dale has worked closely with students and never told anyone to go fly a kite. Dale is the senior member of the Penn College community…his career began in the WTI days and now spans the terms of all our College presidents. He has lived and taught through all the changes at the College since 1963 and has been a prime mover in modernizing the Graphics Art department and curriculum. Dale's former students number in the thousands and are spread across the country and across the years. Ben Franklin produced Poor Richard's Almanac; Dale Metzker produced a rich legacy of successful students. Ben Franklin died on April 17th, 1790, but if he were still around he would envy Dale's career. I think we all do.”

A scholarship fund has been established at Penn College in Mr. Metzker’s name, to continue his legacy of

helping students. We are asking alumni of Printing & Publishing/Graphic Communications to consider

making a gift to that scholarship. It is our hope that with the help of many of his former students, Mr.

Metzker can be surprised upon his retirement at the end of this semester with a generous start to building

the fund and generating scholarship opportunities for our students.

No student wants to receive a thin envelope from their college of choice. Usually, this means that you’ll only find a rejection letter inside, rather than a packet of information about confirming your admission to the school. Although most decisions are final, you may want to challenge their choice by sending a college appeal letter. Sometimes, a letter appealing the rejection actually convinces a school to give you a chance, even though they initially decided not to accept you as a student.

Most students don’t even realize that this is an option, an colleges typically don’t get many letters appealing their decisions. Here’s how write such a letter if the school you want to attend rejects your application:

Read the rejection letter carefully. Most rejection letters are form letters that simply say they chose to give student spots to more qualified applicants. However, some colleges will actually give you reasons why you’ve been rejected. These are points you want to emphasize that you can change. For example, if you’ve been rejected because of your poor high school transcripts, you may want to send them your more recent grades (if you’ve been motivated to start achieving better grades).

Be professional. Although you might feel hurt and angry that you weren’t accepted, avoid accusations, whining, and long-winded letters about your situation. You want to make a personal connection to the letter’s reader, but being professional is important.
